What's the Big Deal About Races?
There's a race in town this weekend. Toad is running and so is Leslie. Me? I'm not sure yet. I will probably run that distance Saturday anyway, but I'm not so big on the whole big group event thing. I have only run two races in my life. First, there is the whole "running in a crowd" issue. One of the primary reasons that I run is that it is something I can do by myself. I don't have to join a team and I don't have to talk to anybody. Second, there is the "it costs money to run a race" issue. One of the other significant benefits of running is that it's cheap. You don't have to buy a bunch of gear or equipment. So.....why would I want to pay money to run in a crowd of people when I could just run by myself for free?? This is something that I've never understood. Of course, in the case of this particular race the money goes to a great cause, but still I'm just not that pumped.
Lots of people love participating in these events and even travel around the country to do so. I'm sure they have their reasons, but I don't understand them. It could have to do with the fact that I'm not fast, so I know I won't win, but surely at least 90% of the racing public have to be pretty clear about the fact that they aren't going to cross the line first. I guess I feel like I'm missing out on something, but I'm just not sure what it is. As for this weekend, we'll see. I'll certainly run 6 miles, but whether I'll do it at the Hospice Hope Run remains to be seen.
